Liar or hypocrite?

August 16, 2007

Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish parliament is having his second crack at being leader of the SNP. When he left the position originally, he had been so emphatic in saying that he would never go back to it. “If nominated, I’ll decline,” he had said. “If drafted I’ll defer. And if elected I’ll resign.”

Within a month of saying those words, he was back in Aberdeen launching his campaign, in the very same hall where he had announced four years earlier that he was quitting.

Does this make him a liar or a hypocrite, or are we allowed to change our minds sometimes?

What is the point…

…of marking relegation zones and promotions / european places on football tables after only one week of the season?

Anyone?

End of the beginning

August 13, 2007

We’ve lived here 3 years today.

The day we moved out of our old house (3 years ago yesterday) we had the kind of persistant drizzle that gets into everything. Then the say we moved in here was just about the hottest day of the year with not a cloud in sight.

Funny that 3 years on, yesterday we had persistant drizzle (though not all day) and to day is lovely and sunny (though there is some cloud about).

Over the weekend we realised just how settled we’ve become here – temptation came knocking, one I would never have thought we’d have been able to resist, but in the end as great as the opportunity was we decided what we have here is too important to risk. Whether we’ll regret that remains to be seen, but I think we gave it the thought and discussion it deserved, so hopefully we’ll be able to look back and even if we think “that would have been nice” we’ll be able to say “but it wasn’t right for us”.

I believe you have to take some risks in life if you want to achieve your dreams, but if those risks end up killing you there’s not a lot of point to it.

You know what?

August 8, 2007

A dog can actually have an itch and scratch without having fleas.

While you might find that blindingly obvious I though I’d point it out as over the last week I’ve come to realise that not everyone knows that.

Also, I think I should point out there are other bugs (especially up here in Scotland) that bite apart from fleas.

Now that’s what I call…

August 7, 2007

…minimal packaging.

I get so fed up on the I buy things these days with the amount of packaging. Whether it’s apples in plastic wrap on a poly tray (what’s wrong with a paper bag?) or something larger like an electrical item or new tool that when you open it you have to go through the box, moulded poly inserts and plastic bag to get to it.

So I was refreshing impressed (not to say a little amused) when my new azada arrived through the post yesterday:

Yes this was the only packaging it came with and yes, it came through the Royal Mail.

Cool huh?
