This time of year is always a bit strange for me – it tends to be all or nothing. This year is definately all.
Being self employed I’m never sure if there’ll be a Christmas rush where everyone wants everything done before the break, or if they’ll have been organised and got it all out the way before the “party season” leaving me with next to nothing to do all December and next to no income. This year, is rush – total madness.
As I live quite a way from my family, I usually do a Christmas run – taking and collecting pressies. Rather than being a chore (not to mention an extremely long drive), I actually really enjoy it. It’s total madness, noisy, tiring, too much food, too much alcohol, just like a lot of people’s idea of a great Christmas actually (but not mine). It does mean I have a really good excuse to call in on friends though. My 2 best mates live “down country” (one in Shropshire, the other in Cheshire) so although not strictly passing their door, I does mean I can stay the night with one on the way down and the other on the way back, have a really good catch up, relax and generally reduce the amount of time spent with my folks.
This year the OH joined a local drama group. Having previously been heavily involved with that kind of thing with him (though I stay firmly “backstage”) and knowing I’d have a lot on my plate and other commitments, I decided not to be a part of it, however I did agree to take some photos of the dress rehearsal. Last week I went to a rehearsal to do some test shots (I have a new camera and haven’t used it in those kind of conditions yet, so wanted to have a play with settings before the dress rehearsal). Watching though, it was painfully obvious they were short-staffed backstage. In the pub afterwards I told the director he needed to be out front directing rather than backstage sorting the scenery and props. “How can I when there’s so much to do?” he says. And then I hear “I’ll do it” fall from my lips. So, at the following rehearsal, the director announces to the stage manager that I’d be doing the stage managing – HOW THE BLOODY HELL DID THAT HAPPEN?
So, with only a week to get to grips with it, I’m now stage manager of the local Christmas play. Oh, and half the scenery’s not painted let alone up so I’ve not had time to find out how it works, or who’s doing what. Oh, and it’s dress rehearsal tonight!
On top of all that, I still have some “Christmas things” to get sorted. I’ll have to find time to do them next week!
