The real world

January 29, 2008

I know we live in a world of artificially low prices and I know that’s going to change (with the rise in oil prices as reserves are used up etc), but that doesn’t stop it coming as a bit of a shock!

Last August our “fixed” rate with the LPG company (for central heating) came to an end – that meant we were up to their regular rate, a 6 pence per litre rise. In November they informed us that the market price had gone up so there’d be a 4 pence per litre rise. We’ve just another letter to say there’s to be an immediate rise of another 3 pence.

That’s an increase of  55% since last August.

Not unexpected, but no less difficulty to take (and fund).

If I was a slightly sceptical person, I’d be asking myself why, having ordered a tank top up on Thursday, we’re only going to get the delivery this afternoon (after the increase is implimented) rather than a next day delivery (as usual). But I’ll not go there.

We have been thinking about changing to a different kind of fuel (wood in some form probably) for both environmental reasons as well as future costs. I have a problem with the idea of ripping out a system that is still in good working order and junking it (thus increasing landfill). There is also the huge initial outlay, where to store the fuel and our future plans to consider, but I can’t deny it’s brought the subject to the top of my “things to consider” list!

Cakee!!!!

January 28, 2008

Probably the most versitile cake idea in the world:
cakee.jpg

Base:
500g plain flour (white or white/wholemeal mix), 50g raw sugar, 2-3 teaspoons dried yeast (more for wholemeal), 3 tablespoons sunflower oil, 1 egg, ½ cup milk. Make as for bread dough and let rise until double in bulk, then knock back and knead lightly.

Roll out on a tray (as large as will fit in your oven).

Add topping (see below). Allow 30ins to rise again.

Bake at about 180o Celsius for 30 – 60 minutes, depending on the topping (the thicker, the longer, but then lower the temperature a bit).

Possible toppings (and this is the good bit):
Absolutely anything!!! Seriously! The one above is raspberry jam and shortbread crumbs, but it’s also excellent with stewed fruit and sugar (or a crumble mix).

You could use creme fraiche, mixed with 100 – 200g raw sugar.

Or just a good sprinkling of sugar, with or without cinnamon.

Grrr, bloody corporations

January 25, 2008

Firstly, they charge you for the honor of having some of their equipment taking up huge amounts of space in your garden (in this case a gas tank, without which we couldn’t buy their LPG and which we’re not allowed to fill with anything but THEIR LPG).

Then, they fail to maintain it properly, so it tells you it’s a third full when actually it’s empty (so you end up with no heating or hot water when it’s cold/wet/snowy).

Then, when you try to phone to let them know about the fault, you get a very cheerful recorded message informing you that “Our offices are now closed, please call back when they are open. Our opening hours are [30mins before you're calling] to [5mins after you called last night]” !

Oh yeah – Happy New Year!
