I knew they’d do that!!!

May 28, 2007

In knew they’d do that (IKTDT) NUMBER ONE: The chickens laid their first egg today, but as they’ve just been wormed we can’t eat it.

IKTDT NUMBER TWO: They laid it at the most inaccessable place in the run AND under a conifer!!!

IKTDT NUMBER THREE: When we were working out how best to worm them, one of then had a poo down the OH’s jumper :D

A tree day

March 12, 2007

Another busy day on Sunday – mostly involving trees.

Firstly, we potted on our Christmas tree (Bruce the Blue Spruce). He’s not looking too happy at the moment, but we have our fingers crossed.

Then the sweet chestnut got a new home. Not exactly a local native, and probably better off in the ground, but the OH grew it from seed and there’s a certain sentimental attachment, not to mention bonding, going on there.

Then the 3 apples and 1 pear tree I bought about a year ago. They were cheap bare rooted ones and as I wasn’t sure how they’d do I potted them in large buckets for some TLC. Now, with a very healthy root growth, they made it to their final home – up the bank by the garage. Their planting holes got a generous dollop of both leaf mold and homemade compost and they’ve been mulched with the woollier bits of sheep dags acquired from our neighbour last year, to help keep the weeds down.

That done, I started to remove the “puppy fencing” from the posts-soon-to-be-chicken-coop, cut down a large chunk of the tree overhanging the house, prune (rather late) the buddleia and hoik out the brambles that come up in the lawn each year. Some of these had rooted at their tips, so I heeled them in by the fence line by the garage – the plan is to make a “useful” hedge (berries for winemaking, jams and, well, berries!).
